Weight-loss can have a positive impact on joint health. With OA, a Framingham study showed that even being slightly overweight significantly increased the incidence of OA in women. They also found that losing 11 lbs. reduced their risk of developing knee OA by 1/2.
A 2005 study followed 150 overweight and obese patients with OA. It found that a weight-loss of 5% caused an 18% improvement in OA symptoms. These symptoms included reduced pain and improved joint function.

•With RA, maintaining a lower weight is linked to better outcomes & recovery. A study examined the response of RA patients to a common treatment, infliximab. It found that only about half of overweight and obese patients achieved remission. This is in contrast to patients of normal weight.
